Car Alternator User Manual

Product Overview

It is the core power supply component of the vehicle. It converts mechanical energy of the engine into electrical energy, supplies power to all vehicle electrical equipment, and charges the battery simultaneously. Suitable for mainstream gasoline / diesel passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

Core Structure & Terminal Definition

1 Core Structure

Stator winding (generates alternating current)

Rotor winding (excitation function)

Rectifier (converts AC to DC)

Housing (serves as natural grounding terminal)

2.2 Terminal Function (DFM / L / C Type)

D: Connect to IG gear of ignition switch, provides working power for the regulator
F: Connect to rotor winding, controls excitation current magnitude
M: Connect to B+ terminal / battery positive pole, detects alternator output voltage
L: Connect to dashboard charging indicator light, feeds back power generation status
C: Connect to engine ECU (can be left vacant or grounded if no ECU)
B+: Main DC output positive of alternator, connects to battery positive and whole vehicle electrical equipment

3.Simple Wiring Specification

B+ → Battery positive pole (use thick wire, ensure tight connection and good conductivity)
D → IG gear of ignition switch (power on when key turns to ON gear)
F → Internal rotor winding of alternator (the other end of winding is naturally grounded)
M → B+ terminal or directly to battery positive pole
L → One end of dashboard charging indicator light (the other end of indicator connects to IG gear)
C → Engine ECU signal interface (not required if no ECU)
Alternator housing → Engine block (ensure reliable grounding without rust and oil stains)

Usage & Maintenance

1 Usage Notes
When the ignition switch is turned to ON gear, the charging indicator light lights up; after starting the engine, the indicator light should go out, which means the alternator generates electricity normally.

Avoid using high-power electrical equipment (such as car refrigerator, high-power car lights) for a long time when the engine is idling, to prevent battery power loss.
It is forbidden to disconnect the B+ connection while the alternator is running, otherwise the sudden voltage rise will burn out electronic control components.

2 Regular Maintenance (Every 3 Months / 5000 Kilometers)

Appearance inspection: No cracks on the housing, fixing bolts are tightened without looseness and abnormal noise.

Circuit inspection: No ablation, oxidation or looseness on wiring terminals; no aging or damage of wire rubber insulation. Polish oxidized terminals with sandpaper and apply a small amount of conductive paste.

Grounding inspection: Clean rust and oil stains at the grounding position between alternator and engine to ensure good conduction.

Voltage measurement: Start the engine and keep speed at 1500-2000rpm. Measure voltage of B+ terminal with multimeter. Normal range is 13.5-14.5V. Exceeding the range is mostly caused by regulator failure.

Common Fault Diagnosis & Solutions

Charging indicator light stays on after engine starts

Reason: Alternator no power generation, drive belt slipping, loose / oxidized wiring

Solution: Check belt deflection; fasten wiring terminals and clean grounding position; measure B+ terminal voltage, repair alternator or regulator if no voltage output.

Charging indicator light does not light up at ignition switch ON gear

Reason: Damaged indicator light, loose connection of L terminal

Solution: Replace dashboard charging indicator light; check and fasten wiring of L terminal.

B+ terminal voltage higher than 14.5V

Reason: Regulator failure

Solution: Replace with the same model regulator compatible with original vehicle.

B+ terminal voltage lower than 13.5V

Reason: Belt slipping, loose wiring of F terminal, rectifier failure

Solution: Adjust belt tightness; check connection reliability of F terminal; professional inspection is required if rectifier is damaged.

Abnormal noise during alternator operation

Reason: Bearing wear, friction between rotor and stator, belt abnormal noise

Solution: Replace worn bearing; check gap between rotor and stator to avoid friction; adjust belt tension to eliminate belt noise.

Safety Warning

Before wiring and maintenance, must disconnect the battery negative pole to prevent spark caused by short circuit, avoiding electric shock or fire risk.

Do not touch wiring terminals and rotating parts while the alternator is working to prevent electric shock and injury.

When replacing accessories such as regulator and rectifier, please select models compatible with original vehicle. Mixing different specification parts is prohibited.

If the alternator emits smoke or burning smell, turn off the engine and power supply immediately. Do not use it forcibly until troubleshooting after cooling down.
